The Taboo Test
The asymmetry heuristic
Europeans often treat air conditioning as vulgar, wasteful, and faintly American. The same societies heat their homes for half the year without a flicker of moral drama. A radiator running all winter is invisible; a cooling unit running in a heat wave is a small confession of weakness. Nobody writes the rule down. Nobody has to. It lives in the register of things one does not do, and it is enforced the way all such rules are enforced — by a raised eyebrow, a tone, the sense that a decent person would have coped.
I want to take this small, almost comic norm apart completely, because it is built out of exactly the parts this volume has been anatomizing, and because taking it apart hands you the one tool that survives when the particular cases are forgotten. The taboo is a pattern. It rides a genealogy. It survives on symbolism it can no longer name. And it can be dismantled in a single move that generalizes to everything else in this book.
Where the Norm Comes From
The taboo runs strongest in Northern and Western Europe, where winter shaped the architecture of survival. A home without heat was not a home. It was a stone box with beds. Radiators, boilers, thick walls, sealed windows — all of it became ordinary because cold was the old enemy, the thing that killed you if the fuel ran out. Heating earned its dignity honestly, over centuries in which warmth was the difference between a household and a mortality statistic.
That history explains the norm. It does not justify the prejudice. Cooling arrived later and arrived coded wrong: electrical, mechanical, consumerist, artificial. It smelled of American suburbs and sealed malls and hotel lobbies. So Europeans learned to file cooling under decadence and heating under dignity — not by argument but by association, the way patterns always propagate. The genealogy is the whole of the norm’s credibility, and a genealogy is not a reason. That a habit made sense in the climate that built it tells you nothing about whether it makes sense now.
And it no longer does, because heat now kills people in Europe, in numbers, every summer. That should be the end of the etiquette. A society that treats winter comfort as basic decency and summer survival as weakness is running on a climate that no longer exists. The old morality was calibrated to the old enemy, and the enemy has changed sides.
Running the Ledger
The taboo defends itself in the language of virtue, so meet it there. If the real objection to cooling is energy and emissions, then the numbers should point at cooling. They point the other way. European households burn far more energy keeping warm than keeping cool — heating dwarfs air conditioning in the domestic ledger. If energy were genuinely the worry, the first target would be winter: leaky insulation, overheated rooms, a window cracked open above a blasting radiator, the aging oil furnace. Air conditioning would sit near the bottom of the priority list, an afterthought. The concern that claims to be about energy is aimed precisely where the energy is not.
Then take the objections one at a time, because each dissolves on contact.
The outdoor-heat objection says the machines make the city hotter. It is true that a condenser dumps its heat outside, and that a courtyard packed with them gets hotter and louder. But urban heat comes overwhelmingly from sun on concrete and asphalt, from glass and traffic and missing trees. The condenser bolted to an apartment wall is a rounding error against the albedo of the street it stands on. Blaming cooling for the heat island is blaming the smallest contributor because it is the one with a moral charge already attached.
The emissions objection has a real core: summer cooling running on dirty power or emergency peaker plants does add carbon. But that is an argument against careless grid planning, not against cooling. A serious environmental case would weigh total thermal demand against fuel source against how clean the grid is — and it would land on decarbonizing the grid, not on shaming the appliance. It would not single out cooling for feeling vulgar.
The constraints objection points at old buildings, dense streets, protected façades, weak grids. These are real. But a constraint is a design requirement, not a moral argument. Europe already guts old buildings for insulation, fire codes, plumbing, broadband; it retrofits centuries of masonry whenever it decides something has become non-negotiable. The capacity exists in many settings. Engineering constraints do not exhaust the barrier; cultural reluctance to treat cooling as part of habitability is one hypothesis the remaining asymmetry puts into view.
Taken together, the objections point beyond cooling itself and leave a residue the stated reasons do not fully explain. That is a warning sign of rationalization, not direct access to a true motive: inherited climate norms, symbolism, status, inconsistent priorities, and unmeasured practical differences remain candidate explanations to compare.
The Heat-Pump Test
Here is the useful comparison. A reversible heat pump can heat a flat in January and cool it in July — the same box running the same thermodynamic cycle in opposite directions. Ask why one use is praised and the other sometimes treated as indulgent. The comparison controls for much of the hardware, but not everything: temperatures, grid mix, efficiency, peak demand, building design, and health benefits can differ by season. A verdict that survives those controls may be environmental; a residue that does not calls for another explanation.
The comparison is therefore a prompt, not a proof. If materially relevant differences explain the verdict, the asymmetry dissolves. If they do not, symbolism, inherited climate norms, status, or simple inconsistency become candidate explanations. The test generates omitted variables; further evidence decides among them.
The Instrument
Now generalize, because the heat-pump test is not about air conditioning. It is a procedure, and it is the procedure this entire volume has been running.
Take a norm that treats two cases differently. Check whether the cases are alike in the respect the norm claims to care about. Then list the respects in which they still differ. Find the asymmetry; use it to search for the omitted term. Holding one variable fixed can falsify a simple explanation, but observational comparisons rarely hold every relevant variable fixed. The result is a narrowed inquiry, not mind-reading.
This is a machine for cutting through rationalization, and rationalization is the natural camouflage of a captured pattern. A pattern that has outlived its genealogy, or that never had an honest one, does not announce itself as symbolism or status or tribal loyalty. It dresses in whatever vocabulary is respectable — virtue, safety, equality, justice — and the asymmetry test is how you strip the dress off without having to argue about the wearer’s sincerity. The sincerity is irrelevant. People enforcing the air conditioning taboo may genuinely believe it is about the planet. The test does not accuse them of lying. It asks whether their rule does what they think it does.
Every standing position in this book was audited with this same tool.
Consider the occupational parity comparison. Prestigious and lethal fields can both be highly unequal by sex, yet only the former commonly attract representation campaigns. That difference shows that parity across all outcomes is not the objective. It does not prove hypocrisy: access to a benefit and exposure to a burden are morally different. The test improves the claim by forcing that difference into the open.
Consider the categorical career award. Holding the use of race and sex as eligibility criteria in view exposes an exception to ordinary individual treatment. History, remedial purpose, evidence, duration, alternatives, and proportionality may justify that exception; they are not irrelevant differences. The test identifies the burden the program must carry rather than deciding the case by relabeling it.
Consider the sanctuary platform, where I argued that self-segregation can be moralized as safety. Run the asymmetry directly: wait for the news that ought to divide a genuinely mixed audience, and watch whether the timeline argues or goes silent. A refuge that calls itself safe should be able to host a disagreement; the trending topic it structurally cannot see is evidence against a simple safety account. Preference for distance from unsettling disagreement becomes one candidate explanation. Whether purity, safety, moderation, selection effects, or another variable best explains the verdict requires further comparison.
And consider the deepest case, the one the capstone turned on: the institutions that could not perceive the grooming-gang pattern. There the asymmetry is temporal and about attention rather than status, but it is the same instrument. Hold the safeguarding mandate fixed — protect the child — and watch which offender patterns the institution could see and which fell into the scotoma. The mandate was constant; the perception was not; and the difference supports the narrower claim that the political cost of noticing influenced attention. It does not by itself identify one institutional objective or the motives of every participant.
The Method, Stated
This is the volume’s argument in miniature. Patterns are useful units of cultural explanation: coherent configurations of information stable enough to influence later behavior. People remain the agents who copy, revise, reward, enforce, or resist them. Cultural environments select among variants through those actions. Labels, corrupted categories, and engineered ambiguities can defeat perception rather than aid it. Institutions become captured when a protected commitment predictably disables symmetric error correction.
Against all four, the defense has been the same two-part discipline. First, attention: look directly at facts coded as awkward without inflating them into collective indictments. Second, controlled comparison: hold the stated variable fixed where possible, enumerate what remains different, and test the candidate explanations. Attention finds the anomaly; asymmetry helps design the next question. Neither requires an accusation of bad faith.
That is the tool I am leaving you with. When a rule treats apparently like cases differently, the difference is data. Find the asymmetry, identify the uncontrolled variables, and ask which of them survives evidence. The heuristic is valuable precisely because it can reveal both hypocrisy and a morally relevant distinction the first framing omitted.
There is one asymmetry this volume has deliberately left standing, and it belongs to the next. All along I have written as though stripping the symbolism off a norm were a clean gain — as though the air conditioning taboo, exposed as nostalgia, simply evaporates and leaves behind a sensible calculation about heat and habitability. But symbolism is not only a disguise that rationalizations wear. It is also the thing human beings live inside, the load-bearing structure of dignity and meaning and the sacred, and a civilization that learns to dissolve every symbol with a heat-pump test may find it has dissolved something it needed. The tool cuts cleanly. The question of what should be left standing when the cutting is done — what a secular age keeps sacred, and why — is the one the final volume takes up.
