When the Claim Is True
Rosalind Franklin and honest adjudication
Before applying this volume’s tools to current disputes, begin with a case in which the central claim survives scrutiny. A framework that only acquits its author’s preferred side is not an instrument; it is a costume for a verdict. The grey-zone discipline instead asks what would have to be true, separates propositions that need different evidence, and accepts a mixed result when the record is mixed.
Rosalind Franklin’s role in discovering DNA’s structure is an unusually good test because two opposing myths now compete. In one, James Watson and Francis Crick stole Photograph 51 and thereby stole the double helix. In the other, Franklin merely supplied data that she did not understand and received all the credit she was due. Recent archival work rejects both stories and describes her as an equal contributor.1 The durable claim is not that one photograph handed two thieves a finished solution. It is that Franklin’s experimental and interpretive work materially enabled and checked the model, while the public story long reduced her to a supporting character.
Before the facts, the standard. An adjudicated claim of unfair deprivation needs three things: a benefit or standing the person had earned; an identifiable mechanism that withheld, diverted, or obscured it; and evidence connecting that mechanism to the proposed explanation. Those are separate burdens. Evidence of inadequate credit does not by itself prove gender discrimination; evidence of a sexist environment does not show that every professional slight was caused by sex. The point of the procedure is to preserve both findings when the first is firmer than the second.
The Facts, Read Off Directly
Franklin and her doctoral student Raymond Gosling produced Photograph 51, an X-ray diffraction image of the B form of DNA. Maurice Wilkins later showed it to Watson. At about the same time, Max Perutz passed an internal Medical Research Council report containing Franklin’s measurements to Crick. The photograph confirmed that the B form was helical, but it did not uniquely determine the structure. The MRC report was more consequential: its measurements and symmetry information helped Watson and Crick test the model they developed through iterative chemical reasoning and model-building.2
When the model appeared in Nature in 1953, Watson and Crick acknowledged being stimulated by the general nature of Franklin and Wilkins’s unpublished results. Franklin and Gosling published their own paper in the same issue. A later Watson–Crick paper stated more directly that the formulation would have been very unlikely without the King’s College data. The first acknowledgment was therefore incomplete as an account of dependence, even though the scientific record did include Franklin’s work.
Four features of the record are worth stating plainly, because the verdict rests on their accumulation rather than on any one of them.
First, circulation and attribution. Watson saw Photograph 51 without Franklin present, although Gosling later said he had transferred it to Wilkins with her knowledge. Perutz shared a report that was not marked confidential, and archival evidence suggests Franklin expected information to circulate within that research network. Those details defeat the simple theft story. They do not make the initial published acknowledgment an adequate description of how much the King’s College results contributed.
Second, power asymmetry. Franklin worked inside a male-dominated hierarchy at King’s College, where Wilkins treated her as a subordinate rather than the peer she was. The Cambridge laboratory that Watson and Crick occupied carried higher status, easier publication channels, and the freedom to chase theory over experiment. The system rewarded charisma and connection — resources the two men had in abundance and Franklin was structurally denied.
Third, gender and reputation. Watson’s later memoir, The Double Helix, compounded the wrong by casting Franklin as a dour, difficult woman — “Rosy,” a nickname she never used — and offering her personality as the explanation for her exclusion. That portrait shaped decades of public memory. The sexism of the 1950s was not incidental background; it was a structural bias that lowered her standing in life and in legacy.
Fourth, credit and consequence. When the Nobel Prize went to Watson, Crick, and Wilkins in 1962, Franklin had been dead for four years, and Nobel prizes are not awarded posthumously. We cannot infer how the committee would have treated a living Franklin. We can say that the familiar three-man discovery story understates both her experimental contribution and her independent interpretation of the evidence.
Granting the Defense in Full
An adjudication must not stack the record. The case for Watson and Crick has real content:
The relevant research groups exchanged information informally. The MRC report was internal but not marked confidential, and the archival record suggests Franklin expected Perutz to know and discuss its contents. Photograph 51 was under Gosling’s control when it reached Wilkins. And all the parties published in the same 1953 issue of Nature: Franklin’s own paper laid out experimental work under her name, so she was not written out of the scientific record.
Each point does real work. Together they demolish the maximalist story — the one in which two men crept into a locked drawer, lifted a stolen photograph, and buried the woman they robbed. That story is false, and a framework that cannot tell it apart from the better-supported account is worthless.
What survives is more precise. Informal circulation did not entitle the model-builders to describe the experimental dependency vaguely. Publication beside Watson and Crick was not the same as equal public recognition, especially once Watson’s memoir supplied a memorable and sexist caricature. The counterarguments move the verdict away from theft and toward inadequate attribution within a dysfunctional collaboration, followed by a distorted public narrative.
The Verdict, Calibrated
Watson and Crick did not obtain the double helix by stealing a decisive photograph. They did use results generated at King’s College to check their model, and their first acknowledgment did not communicate that dependence adequately. Franklin was an equal contributor to the discovery, not a technician who failed to understand her own data. On those propositions, the under-credit claim is true.
The discrimination claim requires more calibration. Franklin worked in a sexist institution and Watson later described her through sexist stereotypes; those facts are relevant evidence, not decorative context. But the record does not isolate how much of the initial credit allocation was caused by gender rather than hierarchy, disciplinary roles, informal scientific norms, personality conflict, or the model’s priority. The strongest verdict is therefore layered: material contribution and subsequent under-credit are well supported; sexism plausibly shaped the environment and public memory; a simple causal claim that sexism alone determined the discovery credit is not established.
Notice what the honest verdict costs. It denies both the satisfaction of a robbery story and the comfort of dismissing the disparity. A mixed causal record is harder to hold than either myth, and holding it is what adjudication is for.
History cannot reassign the prize, but it can rebalance the narrative. Franklin was not a supporting character in the discovery of DNA. She was one of its authors, and that it took decades to say so is itself part of the record. There is a temptation, especially once the principals are dead, to separate the science from the men and sanitize the legacy until the textbooks read clean. That would be another distortion. The discovery was not a moment of pure reason; it was a human event, tangled in ambition, hierarchy, and prejudice, and to remember it honestly is to remember all of it — the light and the shadow interlaced. Watson’s own life supplied the caption for the whole episode: the presumption that insight excuses empathy, the belief that grasping a pattern others missed licenses overlooking the people whose work made the pattern visible.
History does not owe forgiveness, only clarity. The molecule is indifferent to fairness; we are not, and the whole reason to run the procedure is that our judgments should track the record rather than the story our faction prefers. The applications that follow now have a control: a claim that survives where the evidence is strong and narrows where causation is uncertain.
